How I Got My Period Back with Lauren Henry

If you’ve been told your period is just missing and there’s nothing to do but wait — or been handed a prescription that masked the problem without touching the root — this conversation is for you. Lauren Henry’s period disappeared for six years. This is how she got it back.

When It Stopped

Lauren’s period had always been regular. Then she moved away to college at 18, and it just stopped.

There was a week of unexplained spotting — she’d never had spotting before — and then nothing. No period that month. And then the next month. And the next.

At first, she wasn’t particularly worried. She thought maybe it would come back on its own. It was only after about four or five months that she started to think something more was going on, and it was the end of her first year of college before she finally went to a doctor about it.

What the Doctors Offered

She was diagnosed with amenorrhea. The prescription was birth control pills.

She took them for a year. Her period came back while she was on them — but she knew it wasn’t a solution. It felt like a band-aid, masking the problem without touching the root cause.

Within that year on the pill, anxiety and brain fog started to develop. They got bad enough that Lauren began researching what might be causing them — and what she found about the effects of hormonal contraceptives on the body made her want to come off them entirely. She did. The brain fog didn’t clear immediately — but going off the pill felt right, and she never went back.

Her period stopped again.

Six Years of Searching

What followed was years of going deeper — to endocrinologists, thyroid specialists, gynaecologists. She tried thyroid medication. Progesterone cream. Multiple acupuncturists. Different diets — gluten-free, dairy-free, paleo, grass-fed meat, high-quality dairy. Conflicting information everywhere: one source saying minimal carbohydrates and high fat, another saying women need healthy carbohydrates every day.

Nothing worked. Not the medications, not the specialists, not the dietary experiments.

More symptoms built up over that time — digestive issues, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, anxiety, changes in skin. A Lyme disease diagnosis arrived in 2015. She took antibiotics against everything she believed — because she thought at the time it was the only way.

But alongside everything that wasn’t working, something shifted in Lauren during those years. She became deeply curious about the body, about women’s health, about what was actually going on underneath the surface. It became an obsession. And that curiosity eventually led her to the thing that worked.

What Actually Worked

Someone Lauren was working for recommended the Medical Medium book by Anthony William. She was exhausted of health books at that point and almost didn’t pick it up. But there was a chapter on Lyme disease, and she decided to go to the bookstore and read a few pages.

She stood in the store and felt like the book was about her. She bought it immediately. Started implementing the information that same night.

What she changed:

More fruit. She had been doing a low-carb paleo diet. Anthony’s book recommended bringing in significantly more fruit — healthy carbohydrates that her body and her reproductive system had been missing.

Snacking every one to two hours. This was opposite to the intermittent fasting advice everywhere at the time. But it made sense to her — and it later became clear it was a key part of restoring her adrenal health.

Celery juice. Sixteen ounces every morning, on an empty stomach before breakfast. She’d never heard this recommendation anywhere else. It helped her digestive problems almost immediately, and she became one of its strongest advocates from the beginning.

Heavy metal detox protocol. Specific foods brought in daily to support the body’s detoxification pathways.

Cutting out meat and animal products completely. Her diet got very simple.

She also started working with a practitioner experienced in Anthony William’s approach, who introduced Vitex — an herb Lauren had tried before without success. Within two months of implementing the full protocol, her period came back.

It arrived with no warning. No breast tenderness, no cramps, no premenstrual signs of any kind. It just showed up one day.

And it has come back every single month regularly since.

What Was Actually Going On

Looking back, Lauren identifies a few root causes:

Not enough carbohydrates — the paleo diet was not supporting her reproductive system or her adrenals. Bringing fruit and healthy carbohydrates back in was foundational.

Adrenal health — snacking every one to two hours helped restore adrenal function, which is central to hormonal health.

Liver health — the protocol naturally supported the liver’s ability to cleanse and process hormones, even before she was focusing on it directly.

Possible viral activity — looking back, Lauren suspects there may have been viral activity in her reproductive system that was also part of the picture. Healing needs to be looked at holistically. Everything is connected. When she focused on healing her body overall — the digestive system, the Lyme disease, the adrenals, the liver — her reproductive system healed too.

I didn’t focus on getting my period back. I focused on my overall health — because everything is connected.

On Losing Hope

She lost hope multiple times. Tried a new protocol, followed it for six months, saw no results. That happened over and over.

What kept her going was her mother’s support — that consistent presence that helped her keep moving forward. And a personal conviction: every single day was one step closer to the answer. She prayed. She kept going. For her, there was no giving up — it was a personal mission.

Three Things to Start With Today

Lauren’s three tips for anyone whose period is missing or whose cycle is struggling:

Eat more fruit. There is a lot of fear around fruit and sugar — but fruit is completely different from processed sugar or high fructose corn syrup. It’s full of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. In many ways we mirror nature — we bear fruit too. Eating more fruit for reproductive health makes sense on a very fundamental level.

Drink celery juice. Sixteen ounces in the morning, on an empty stomach, before breakfast. Give it a little time before eating. It’s effective at clearing bad bacteria and viruses, and there is evidence it can help bring on menstruation.

Give your reproductive system love. Be conscious of what you’re telling your body. Lauren genuinely believes the body hears what we tell it and responds. Nurturing thoughts. Patience. Care. Not just protocols.

Where to Start with Anthony William’s Work

If this conversation has sparked curiosity, Lauren’s recommendations:

For fertility specifically — Life Changing Foods (Book 2) has a dedicated fertility chapter. For thyroid and hormonal imbalances — Thyroid Healing (Book 3). For the full foundation — Medical Medium (Book 1), which includes a 28-day cleanse protocol and everything you need to begin.

ABOUT LAUREN

Lauren Henry Health Coach

Based in Hawaii, Lauren is a plant-based animal lover who has healed herself of chronic illness with food and natural medicine. She loves making plant-tastic foods, spending time in nature, finding any reason to laugh, and learning about anything related to natural healing and spirituality.

A few years ago her life was turned upside down because of chronic and unexplainable health problems like constant digestive issues, brain fog, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, changes in skin, anxiety and depression. She went to many different doctors both conventional and alternative and got a lot of different diagnoses but no helpful solutions. Then in September 2015 she was diagnosed with Lyme disease and grudgingly took antibiotics because she thought it was the only way to heal Lyme disease. Shortly after starting the treatment though, she was introduced to the book, Medical Medium: Secrets Behind Chronic and Mystery Illness and How to Finally Heal by Anthony William. It provided in depth information about Lyme disease as well as many other chronic and autoimmune conditions and how to heal the root causes. After reading this book her life was changed; she started implementing the dietary suggestions, supplements, and meditations into her daily life from the book and slowly started to heal!

Fast forward to today, Lauren has eliminated nearly all of her health problems, has more energy and hope for the future, and feels more inspired than ever to help others recover their health and provide information about healing physically, spiritually, and emotionally.
